Our New Dog

Mommy's been acting all weird lately.  She keeps wanting to look at our
baby book.  Sure, it's cute, but four times a week?

"You're going to get a baby," Nelene said.  "My mom
got all wierd, then I got a drink-and-wet doll, then
I got Felix."

"Felix is cute," Ian said.
"You want to keep him?" Nelene asked.
"No thank you," said Sean.  Felix started to cry.

"Mommy, are we your babies?" Sean asked.
"You used to be," she said.  "Now you're my big boys."  She gave us some crackers and juice.
"I'll lend you my drink-and-wet doll," Nelene said.

Later, when we were playing, Mommy gave us a gift!
"It better not be a doll," Ian muttered.
We opened it anyway.

What a funny gift!  A dog dish, a leash, a ball.
"Mommy," said Sean, "we don't have a dog."
Mommy said we could go to the shelter and get one!
No puppies, though, and nothing too big.

The shelter made Sean sad.  He wanted to rescue all the homeless pets,
but we could only have one.

Some were too big.  Some had puppies.

Some were cats.  Mommy said no cats.

But three of them were about the right size.  The
lady let us hold them.  It was SO hard to pick!

We picked this one!!!  He cried in the car on the way
home.  He cried when we showed him his bed.

He cried when we showed him his food dish.
Then he ran and hid under a chair.  Mommy said he
needed to get used to his new home.

"Did you think of a name for your dog yet?"  Mommy asked us.
We thought hard.  He didn't look like a Snowball or a Blackie.  He didn't
answer when we called him Spot.
"How about Zane?" Mommy said.  When she said that, our dog came out
from under the chair and barked.
"I think he likes that name!" Sean said.

After supper, Ian rolled Zane's ball for him.
Zane chased it.  They played until we had to get
ready for bed.

When Ian tried to tuck Zane into his bed, Zane
cried again.

Then he followed us right into our bed.  Mommy frowned,
but she let him stay.  She read us a story about a boy
who gets a baby sister.  She kissed us goodnight, and
she petted Zane.

That was a while ago.  Now Zane is our
best friend!  We take him everywhere.

Zane is so funny.  He loves to play ball, go on walks,
and he likes to bark at birds too!

He is the best dog in the whole world.

Today, Mommy gave us another present.  "I hope we
get another dog!" Ian yelled.  "Or a cat!"
"Or a lizard," Sean added.  We ripped open the
package.

Well what do you know.  Drink and wet dolls.
